Shaw, for his part. has established himself well, despite the misgivings of his domineering mother, Mrs. Eleanor Shaw Iselin. She is a red-baiter, accusing anyone who disagrees with her right-wing reactionary views of being a Communist. Raymond hates her, not only for how she's treated him, but equally because of his stepfather, the ineffectual U.S. Senator John Iselin, who is intent on seeking higher office. When Marco learns that others in his Korean War unit have had nightmares similar to his own, he realizes that something happened to all of them in Korea, and that Raymond Shaw is the focal point.

At the end of their encounter at the Vienna train station, which is also how the book ends, they, not providing contact information to the other, vowed to meet each other again in exactly six months at that very spot. As the media scrum at the bookstore nears its conclusion, Jesse spots Celine in the crowd, she who only found out about the book when she earlier saw his photograph promoting this public appearance. Much like their previous encounter, Jesse and Celine, who is now an environmental activist, decide to spend time together until he is supposed to catch his flight back to New York, this time only being about an hour. Beyond the issue of the six month meeting, what has happened in their lives in the intervening nine years, and their current lives, they once again talk about their philosophies of life and love, this time with the knowledge of their day together and how it shaped what has happened to them.

Ginny enlists Kit against her will in an attempt to reform her daughter, and Kit travel to Blackwood, an isolated, dark old mansion in the middle of a forest outside the city. There she meets her companions: nice Izzy, shy Ashley, reluctant Sierra, and borderline Veronica, teens as troubled as herself. Locked in a place without Internet, cell phones, or any other trace of modern technology, Kit watches as everyone changes in strange ways: Izzy develops an extreme obsession for mathematics, Sierra for painting, Ashley for writing, and herself for piano; meanwhile, Veronica seems immune to obsession. Trapped between strange memory gaps and her love interest in Madame Duret's son Jules, Kit asks Veronica's to discover the reason for their different changes. They investigate the forbidden, ruined wing of Blackwood and discover that all of them--Izzy, Ashley, Sierra, Veronica, and Kit--have one secret in common, and that previous students suffered a horrible fate caused by Blackwood's supernatural forces, and it will be their fate as well unless they find a way to avoid it.
