In New York City, Claude Fitzwilliam, Fitzwilly in familiar circumstances, is the chief butler, hence the head servant, in the household, and the confidante and administrator of wealthy, elderly Victoria Woodworth, or so she believes. What Miss Vicki is unaware of is that after her father passed leaving her presumably $10-20 million, he actually left her penniless, which Fitzwilly discovered. As such, Fitzwilly and all the other servants in the house, in their love for Miss Vicki, turned to a career of larceny in order to keep her in the lifestyle to which she is accustomed which includes philanthropy, and in turn pay themselves for their work, with each of their scams, usually at the expense of the wealthy or insurance companies, netting a few thousand dollars, the money often laundered through their front of St. Dismas Thrift Shoppe in Philadelphia. Only able to keep in line with their expenses which includes any surprise outlays by Miss Vicki, they have a chance to get ahead of their financial issues when they embark on a lucrative one time only scam this Christmas season with anxious interior decorator Byron Casey to get him out of his own financial jam. What Fitzwilly does not anticipate is Miss Vicki hiring a secretary, graduate student Juliet Nowell, to assist in a meaningless project set-up by Fitzwilly solely to keep Miss Vicki preoccupied and keep her mind active. There is instant animosity between Fitzwilly and Juliet, Fitzwilly who has to hide the goings-on in the house from her, especially the new work for Casey, and Juliet who believes that Fitzwilly is doing something improper against Miss Vicki. A turn of events between Fitzwilly and Juliet, which was designed solely in Fitzwilly dealing with the issue of Juliet in the house, leads to unexpected results, and the need for Fitzwilly to devise a more stable and thus secure plan to deal with their financial situation.

They discover that their kitchen is full of prepackaged pudding, how they got all the pudding they are unaware. From a telephone message they receive, they come to the realization that at some point during the previous night they were at a party at the house of their girlfriends, twins Wanda and Wilma, and that today is their one-year anniversary, which they did remember as they already bought the twins gifts. But the worst thing in not remembering what happened last night is that Jesse's car is missing. In trying to find out what happened to the car, they believe they have to recreate the feeling and mindset of last night, meaning getting wasted all over again. In trying to find the car, they, being the types that area easily distracted, get sidetracked by one item after another, most specifically the potential of having sex with hot babes (sex with which Wanda and Wilma have not yet provided them), and learning that they apparently had a suitcase filled with $200,000 last night, the suitcase and therefore the money to which they don't know what happened. During their day of discovery, they also end up encountering one group of alien wannabes, and two groups of actual aliens, all three groups who are after the continuum transfunctioner which they believe Jesse and Chester have. Jesse and Chester don't know where it is let alone what it is, but these three groups seem to be willing to do whatever necessary to get it from Jesse and Chester. PLOT:
Harvard educated lawyer Lucy Kelson, following in the footsteps of her lawyer parents, uses her career for social activism. She hides any sense of femininity behind her work. George Wade is the suave public face of the Manhattan-based Wade Corporation, a development firm that Lucy routinely opposes and whose true head is George's profit-oriented brother, Howard Wade. George, who has a reputation as a lady's man, has had as his legal counsel a series of beautiful female lawyers with questionable credentials, they who have more primarily acted as his casual sex partners. Needing a real lawyer, he offers Lucy the job of his legal counsel on a chance meeting. Despite warnings from her parents in working for the "enemy", Lucy, who has no intention of being the latest in his bed partners, accepts the job as she feels she can do more good from the inside, and as George, as part of the job offer, promises not to demolish a community center in a heritage building as part of a development project near her childhood Coney Island home where her parents still live. Although Lucy is able to affect the type of change she wanted from this position, she finds she cannot deal with George's expectations of her, namely being his primary confidante and advisor at all hours of the day and night, mostly about issues she considers frivolous. As such, she gives him two weeks' notice, although she promises to help George find her replacement. As Lucy begins to review resumes, George himself unilaterally decides to hire June Carver, a fellow Harvardite, but who seems to have her sights set on George as both a boss and personal partner. As June begins to replace Lucy in seemingly all aspects of George's life, Lucy begins to realize that she herself has fallen for George. However, Lucy's feelings for George and her attempts to re-ingratiate herself into George's life are placed into jeopardy when she learns of a Wade Corporation decision against her basic sensibilities.

At first thought to be meteors, they are later revealed to be gigantic spacecraft, piloted by a mysterious alien species. After attempts to communicate with the aliens go nowhere, David Levinson, an ex-scientist turned cable technician, discovers that the aliens are going to attack major points around the globe in less than a day. On July 3rd, the aliens all but obliterate New York, Los Angeles and Washington, as well as Paris, London, Houston and Moscow. The survivors set out in convoys towards Area 51, a strange government testing ground where it is rumored the military has a captured alien spacecraft of their own. The survivors devise a plan to fight back against the enslaving aliens, and July 4th becomes the day humanity will fight for its freedom.
